Great Plains Conference Adopts New ...

A second conference changes nomination format.

The Great Plains Conference voted to adopt a new structure at their quadrennial conference session, held October 22-23 in Amarillo, Texas. They are the second conference to adopt this new nomination format at their quadrennial session.

The new structure operates by nominating a slate of officers rather than electing for each position. Each nominee for conference superintendent must present a slate of officers that includes the assistant superintendent and conference secretary/treasurer. Nominees and their slates must be submitted prior to the quadrennial conference, along with a resume of each nominee’s qualifications.

Nearly 75 delegates were present to vote on the proposed change. Although there was some initial opposition to the proposal that resulted in a 45-minute debate, the motion ultimately passed with overwhelming approval.

Two nominees had been submitted for the position of conference bishop, but one individual withdrew his name. Bishop Gary Burd was re-elected by acclamation after a ballot vote to set aside the statute of limitations on his term of service.

The new conference board is:

Gary Burd – Bishop
Enrique Venegas – Assistant Superintendent
Craig Lawlis – Secretary / Treasurer
